Despite its boutique size, this hidden gem of Australian wine country consistently produces wines of exceptional caliber. Domenica is a boutique estate located in Beechworth, founded by winemaker Peter Graham. The estate is renowned for its cool, high-altitude climate, granite slopes, and low-intervention winemaking philosophy. Peter masterfully leverages Beechworth’s cool climate and granitic terroir to unlock Gamay's full potential, crafting a serious, structured wine reminiscent of Cru Beaujolais and capable of rivaling fine Burgundy. With its chiseled framework and captivating flavor profile, international wine critics have lauded it as one of the smartest choices for discerning drinkers.

Vinification
Fruit is sourced from a southeast-facing slope at approximately 450 meters elevation. Hand-harvested and fermented in open concrete vats for three weeks. Around 15% underwent whole-bunch fermentation, while the remainder was destemmed as whole, uncrushed berries. Gentle pump-overs were carried out to protect delicate varietal aromatics. Manual punch-downs were introduced late in the fermentation to build structural depth, followed by 8 months of maturation in French oak foudres and demi-muids.

Tasting Notes
Opens with brooding aromas of dark cherry, tobacco leaf, and forest floor, evolving into nuances of aniseed and cocoa alongside heady, elegant notes of dried rose petals and sandalwood. Distinct earthy undertones and a wet-stone petrichor minerality anchor the wine. Intricately layered and nuanced, it boasts silky, seamless tannins and a brisk, crunchy acidity that carries a lingering finish. A benchmark expression on par with Cru Beaujolais, radiating pristine purity, vibrancy, and authentic Australian terroir.

Food Pairing
Pan-seared duck breast, Taiwanese three-cup chicken (San Bei Ji), stir-fried pork liver, or Brie cheese.

Accolades & Scores
2026 The Wine Front – 94 points ('25)
2025 The Wine Front – 94 points ('24)
2025 James Halliday – 94 points ('24)
2025 James Suckling – 92 points ('24)
2023 James Suckling – 92 points ('22)
