TAKETSURU ESSENTIALS 2026

The Origin of Yoichi – A Tribute to Coal-Fired Distillation

On May 1, 2026, NIKKA WHISKY officially announced the launch of the TAKETSURU ESSENTIALS Series, a new limited-edition collection celebrating the 30th anniversary of the TAKETSURU whisky brand in 2030. The series will feature five annual releases from 2026 to 2030, each highlighting an essential element that defines the character of TAKETSURU whisky.

The inaugural release, TAKETSURU ESSENTIALS 2026, returns to the birthplace of NIKKA—the Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido. This first edition celebrates the traditional coal-fired direct distillation method, a rare and distinctive production technique that has been preserved at Yoichi since the company's founding.

Staying true to the essence of TAKETSURU, which combines malt whiskies from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, this special edition highlights the distinctive characteristics imparted by Yoichi's coal-fired distillation process. Its refined and rounded blending style is complemented by rich roasted aromas, a full-bodied texture, and complex layers of peat.

Of particular significance, the blend incorporates a selection of long-aged malt whiskies distilled at Yoichi and Miyagikyo in 2000—the year the TAKETSURU whisky brand was established. By bringing together whiskies matured for more than a quarter of a century, this release pays tribute to the origins of TAKETSURU while celebrating its enduring craftsmanship and blending philosophy.

Production is strictly limited to 20,000 bottles worldwide, with 10,000 bottles allocated to Japan and 10,000 bottles to international markets. Taiwan has received an exclusive allocation of just 912 bottles. Each bottle contains 700ml of whisky at 43% ABV.

As the opening chapter of the five-year TAKETSURU ESSENTIALS Series, the 2026 edition represents more than a limited release. Through its focus on Yoichi and the traditional art of coal-fired distillation, it revisits the foundations of TAKETSURU Pure Malt whisky and marks the beginning of a five-year journey toward the brand's 30th anniversary in 2030.
