When older adults begin to lose stability while walking, slow down, or become more prone to falling, the most important factor is often not waiting until they can no longer walk — but whether the right mobility aid is chosen at the right time. In many caregiving situations, a lack of understanding about when and how to use different walking aids can cause seniors to miss the optimal intervention window, gradually leading to loss of mobility and even becoming bedridden. In reality, every mobility aid — from canes and walkers to rollators — corresponds to different levels of physical ability and gait conditions. Choosing the wrong aid may not only fail to improve walking, but can also increase the risk of falls.
In this special Master Lecture, gait and mobility aid specialist Yang Zhong-Yi will draw from extensive clinical and practical experience to introduce the core principles of “Gait Classification.” The session will provide an in-depth analysis of the appropriate user groups and selection criteria for single-point canes, quad canes, walkers, and rollators, helping caregivers, therapists, assistive device professionals, and family members truly understand which mobility aid best suits different walking conditions.
The lecture will also focus on real-world case studies involving two high-risk groups. For seniors with Parkinson’s disease who commonly experience forward-leaning gait and momentum instability, the session will demonstrate how the STAR + CONPAL speed-control wheel system can help reduce forward falls through a physical sensory braking mechanism. For stroke survivors with hemiplegia or individuals with lower back weakness, the course will further explore how the Friend forearm-support rollator utilizes trunk support and one-hand braking functions to improve stability and help delay wheelchair dependency — protecting the user’s ability to continue walking independently.
This is more than a product introduction. It is an essential educational session about helping older adults walk one step longer, fall one time less, and delay bedridden decline for as long as possible. Whether you are caring for an aging family member or working in healthcare, rehabilitation, or senior care, this lecture will provide valuable new insights into gait assessment and mobility aid selection.
