The use of frankincense by the people of southern Arabia and northeastern Africa dates back thousands of years. In ancient Western religious ceremonies, frankincense resin was often burned as incense, creating a solemn and mysteriously fragrant atmosphere. The act of burning frankincense resin is known to calm the mind and deepen breathing, making it especially suitable for religious rituals, as well as for aiding personal meditation, mindfulness, and spiritual stillness.

Frankincense essential oil is distilled from the resin of the frankincense tree. The resin exudes naturally from cracks in the trunk or is collected by skilled harvesters who make incisions in the bark. This liquid resin then dries and hardens into crystalline forms, which are later distilled into essential oil. The term "frankincense" comes from its milky appearance and aromatic quality—“frank” meaning “pure” or “noble,” and “incense” meaning “aromatic substance.”
Frankincense essential oil from Somalia has a dry, bright, and penetrating yet gentle and ethereal aroma. It opens with fruity top notes, followed by warm, balsamic undertones.
The frankincense tree thrives in arid regions and is commonly found in North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of India. Yemen and Eritrea are major trading centers for frankincense. The English term "Frankincense" derives from the Old French franc encens, meaning "noble incense." In ancient times, the Greeks, Romans, and Jews referred to it as "Olibanum."

Varieties of Frankincense Essential Oil:
1. OMAN Frankincense (Boswellia sacra): Internationally recognized as the highest quality, with a correspondingly high price.
2. Somalia Frankincense (Boswellia carterii): The most commonly used in aromatherapy due to its stable supply and chemical composition similar to B. sacra.
3. Indian Frankincense (Boswellia serrata): Produced in central and northern India, known for its more affordable price.
