Ten companies from Myanmar took part in an international food and beverage trade exhibition in Thailand, connecting Myanmar with the regional industry players.

Thaifex-World of Food Asia 2018, a food and beverage trade show in Bangkok, took place from May 29 to June 2. The exhibition is annual international trade exhibition for food and beverages, food technologies, retail and franchise in Asia, with more than 2,500 exhibitors from more than 40 countries and regions being involved. The event was organised by the Thai government together with the Thai business chamber. 

“Thaifex-World of Food Asia aims to help raise the profile of ASEAN businesses in the global food and beverage industry, and to help international businesses gain entry onto the effervescent region,” Mathias Kuepper, managing director of Koelnmesse, the organiser, said. He added the visitors can expect new offerings and trends that are propelling the industry forward at the trade show. 

Most of the Myanmar companies involved are related to agriculture. The 10 firms cover sectors such as coffee and tea, foodstuffs, organic products, sauce and traditional cuisine, among others.

U Min Hlaing, Sithar Coffee chair, who took part in the exhibition, said that the occasion is a helpful business network which provides the opportunity to connect with regional and international industry players and industry groups. He also attended business workshops and seminars and was able to update himself on the latest trends and developments in the sector within the region. 

It’s not easy to sell his products but the network provides a potential revenue source in the long term, he added.

U Htoo Lynn Soe, managing director of Htoo Mar & Pop Pop, another participant, told The Myanmar Times that his firm is able to reach out to the international market and showcase their products via the exhibition. The event also provided the chance to look at how regional players lead the packaging process and how to market via packaging designs.

U Than Tun Aung from Fresh & Green International Manufacturing Co added that they were able to learn new technologies and tools for their products. The network was constructive. 

The World Economic Forum predicts that, by 2020, ASEAN will become the world’s fifth largest economy. More than 60 million households in ASEAN are part of the consuming class.
