Myanmar plans to grow home furnishings sector

YANGON, Myanmar - Hoping to spur growth in its furniture industry, officials in Myanmar are looking to develop a furniture industrial zone.
According to a report in the Myanmar Times, local furniture manufacturers met in late November with U Phyo Min Thein, chief minister of the Yangon region, to discuss a proposed furniture zone in this area.
Kyaw Kyaw Win, president of the Myanmar Furniture Industrial Assn., told the paper that the planned industrial zone will boost the quality of products intended for export. It also is expected to generate more jobs for local workers.
According to the report, Myanmar exported up to $200 million in furniture to foreign countries between 2004 and 2008. However, it was noted that exports fell after that as furniture producers found it difficult to obtain affordable raw materials.
Today, the country furniture exports amount to $15 million annually, while furniture imports from neighboring countries are estimated at $60 million, the report said.
