Why Did We Establish CSG Coffee Star Grading?

When coffees of noticeably different quality receive similarly high scores, what can consumers actually learn from those scores? When coffees from different origins earn awards in separate evaluations, can those scores and awards be meaningfully compared?

Consumers choose among coffees from different origins, processing methods and roasting styles. We therefore aim to establish a shared evaluation standard that better reflects how people actually shop for coffee.

At CSG, a professional judging team assesses coffee quality. We value not only judges’ certifications and experience, but also their ability to distinguish differences in quality, along with scoring consistency and repeatability. The same coffee evaluated in different rounds should receive reasonably consistent results. This is the foundation of a score people can trust.

Star ratings must also have clear quality thresholds. Our non-elimination approach means that each entry is assessed independently against those standards; it does not mean that every entry should receive a star. Our goal is not to maximize the percentage of coffees awarded stars, but to ensure that every star is supported by the quality demonstrated in the cup.

CSG was established to make differences in quality more visible, give roasters specific feedback, and provide consumers with a more trustworthy basis for choosing coffee.
