The Authority on Italian Spirits: Background and Highlights of the Grappa Award
The Grappa Award is an annual international event organized by the “National Association of Italian Wine Cities” (Associazione Nazionale Città del Vino) and officially authorized and supported by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture (MASAF), the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), the Italian Distillers Association (AssoDistil), and the National Grappa Protection Association.
Judging Process: The competition employs a rigorous blind tasting evaluation, with a panel of wine and spirits experts and tasters from around the world scoring entries based on aroma, palate, balance, and regional representativeness.
Competition Scope: Designed specifically for Italy’s most representative traditional spirits, the competition includes Grappa, Acquaviti d’Uva, Italian Brandy, and Vermouth.
Industrial Significance: A premier platform linking terroir, craftsmanship, and national certification
The Grappa Award is not merely a commercial competition; it also carries the mission of promoting Italian spirits culture. Its significance is reflected in three key aspects:
A Quality Benchmark for National Geographical Indications (GI): As “Grappa” is a Geographical Indication (GI) exclusive to Italy, this award provides the most authoritative quality endorsement for global consumers and retail channels.
The Fusion of Terroir and Urban Culture: Unlike typical spirits competitions, the organizers integrate towns and local agricultural products, emphasizing the origin of the grape pomace and the characteristics of the production region, thereby embodying Italy’s spirit of “terroir equals flavor.”
The Clash of Classical Craftsmanship and Contemporary Aesthetics: The competition features distinct categories such as “Aged” and “Young,” encouraging distilleries to innovate in flavor profiles while preserving century-old traditional techniques—such as copper stills.
The Dual Facets of a Double Gold Winner: The Artisanal Spirit of Poli Distillery
Founded in 1898, Poli Distillerie is now in its fourth generation of Poli family ownership. The distillery continues to preserve and use its precious, antique all-copper stills, while incorporating innovative water-bath and vacuum distillation techniques. The brand has been exclusively represented and managed in Taiwan by Baoqiao Fine Wines for some time, receiving widespread acclaim at various wine exhibitions and tasting events.
