Characteristic
Vineyard: Our vineyard, located in Greenock in the west of the Barossa Valley was added to the Elderton family in 2010 and is a great addition to the portfolio. The 60 acre vineyard has plantings back to 1915 and a terroir that has been in demand by many of the Barossa’s elite winemakers. 21– 35 year old Semillon vines were cordon cut and the fruit allowed to desiccate for 3 weeks on the vine.
Grape Variety : 100% Semillon
Region : Greenock, Barossa
Vine Age : 17 – 31 years
Soil : Free draining and rich in ironstone
Style : Dessert, rich, luscious, balance,
Color : luminescent straw
Aroma/Palate : Toffee, honey and candied citrus with nuances of marmalade, medium body, good acid balance.
Drinkable Period : 2020 - 2030
Alcohol : 11% Residual Sugar : 130.5 g/l
Winemaker's Comment : Our Golden Semillon comes from 1985 & 1999 plantings of Semillon. As is typical of the 2020 vintage, crop levels were moderate in the Semillon. We cane out portions of the two blocks at full flavor ripeness to enhance sugar concentration. Whilst holding onto natural acid in the resultant bunches. The fruit was then left to hang on the vine, concentrating flavor in the mild autumn weather. 2020 was very dry, which meant there was very little disease pressure, allowing the true fruit flavors to shine through in the 2020 Golden Semillon.
With the threat of rain, the fruit was hand harvest in mid-April and pressed slowly to ensure full extraction of flavor from the skins. Fermentation was carried out in a stainless steel tank, with a small portion barrel fermented in new French Oak. Fermentation was then stopped at a point where alcohol, sweetness and acid were all in balance. Filtration and immediate bottling was ensured the fresh fruit flavors are captured in this wine.
Expert Comment: A bold, lemon and honey nose with poached-pear, peach and lifted lemon-marmalade notes, as well as bergamot. The acidity holds rich, sweet lime-marmalade flavors in fresh mode. Some pastry to close.
Score/Award : James Suckling 91 points
Food Pairing : fruit-based desserts.
