About the tea, we need to mention a person who was called Jing-shi Wei, his way of tea-making is not only the original method of Taiwanese tea but also gives huge support to the industry of Paochung tea. Jing-shi Wei, born in 1853, invented the business of tea manufacturing. He created Nangang Baozhong tea with its delicate fragrance that was present- ed to the world in 1873. At the time in 1885, Jing-shi Wei tea leaves were released, Mingchuan-Liu served as governor of Taiwan. The "Zhongzi Tea", which does not require floral fragrance but has a natural fragrance, disruptied the tea-mak- ing technology of the past millennia, aroused the recognition of the Qing court, and became the royal tea of the Qing emperor of that time.
Now, Jing-shi Wei’s descendants have also inherited the cause of their predecessor and established the Wei’s Tea Industry, upholding the original intention of inheriting the intangible cultural heritage of Baozhong Tea. According to the ancestors’ insistence on choosing tea, they will share high-quality tea with the public. It is contracted with tea farmers in various parts of Taiwan. Fresh tea products are harvested according to different seasons, and the quality of the tea produced is strictly controlled.
Baozhong tea is also a tea that pays attention to the aroma. It has the five characteristics of fragrance, strength, mellow- ness, rhyme, and beauty. In addition, its floral fragrance is also one of the characteristics that attract tea lovers. Jing-shi Wei developed a new tea-making method that allows tea leaves to naturally have a floral fragrance without the need for flowers. This unique baking technology is better than floral tea made by adding scented flowers. The color of Nangang Baozhong Tea is dense green, and the aroma is refreshing and pleasant.
During the Japanese Occupation, Jing-shi Wei‘s kind of tea not only won a special prize at the Japan Fair, was loved by the Emperor Showa, but had also a remarkable performance in export sales. It was also named by the Emperor of Siam as a royal tea. During the Japanese occupation, this tea-making became the mother method of Taiwanese tea farmers’ future technology. Baozhong tea, Tieguanyin, Oolong tea, Red Oolong, High mountain tea, and Oriental Beauty Tea all evolved based on this technology. Only teas with natural floral fragrance are real Taiwanese teas!
The emergence of Nangang Baozhong Tea has not only brought countless business opportunities but also brought prosperity to the Nangang area. Jing-shi Wei’s tea-making methods have also opened up new paths for Taiwan’s tea industry. He can be said to be the great benefactor and originator of Baozhong and Taiwanese tea.
