Taipei, 21 August 2024 – TRUMPF, a German high-tech company, is displaying its comprehensive laser portfolio at Laser & Photonics Taiwan 2024 in Taipei. Efficient and sustainable solutions for E-mobility

With new laser applications, TRUMPF is ensuring cost-effective production of batteries for e-cars... The lithium-ion battery costs make up nearly one third of the total costs of battery-electric vehicles. Drying electrode coatings is a delicate process that consumes the most energy in Li-ion battery manufacturing. TRUMPF developed the TruHeat VCSEL laser heating systems to enable the homogeneous, space-saving drying of very large surfaces with relatively low power densities. Based on the latest generation multi-junction VCSEL arrays, the heating system is optimized for thermal design with highly efficient driver electronics, which further provide precise control of individual illumination zones to support optimal homogeneity and flexible intensity profiles. “The popularization of electric vehicles is one of the focus on the pathway of net-zero emission in Taiwan, and reducing the production cost of battery is a crucial factor for local manufacturers and system integrators,” said Patrick Kemnitz, Managing Director of TRUMPF Taiwan.

Lasers enable battery recycling

For the first time, carmakers and battery manufacturers can now recycle used or defective batteries from electric cars on an industrial scale using laser technology from TRUMPF as the company develops laser systems that cut used batteries safely and remove the valuable raw materials from the battery foil. The raw materials can then be sorted and the battery cells that are still usable can be separated and reused directly.

Advanced solutions for semiconductor industry

The high-tech company, who’s lasers are an integral part of the EUV lithography for chip production presents in Taipei further solutions for the semiconductor industry. TRUMPF Electronics presents on the booth generators that are essential for operating so-called plasma chambers. With the help of plasma, materials are applied or etched away on the wafer based on a previously exposed blueprint. This creates tiny semiconductors (“transistors”) with electrically conductive and insulating layers. They make it possible to store and process information in a targeted manner. TRUMPF generators are also used in various other sectors, such as the medical, glass and solar industries.  With TRUMPF generators, you can ensure process stability and high conversion efficiency.
